The UAE General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) publishes the 43 × 55 mm visa-photo standard used by Dubai and federal portals. Plain white background, neutral expression, and head coverage that follows ICAO Doc 9303 Part 4.

UAE visa photo rejection patterns from GDRFA processing

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) handles UAE entry visas, residence permits, work permits, and tourist visa applications. GDRFA operates three main portals — Dubai (GDRFA-Dubai), federal (ICP), and free zone authorities — but the photo specification is uniform: 43 × 55 mm.

GDRFA's automated photo check is among the stricter in the Middle East. Common failures cluster around the unusual 43 × 55 mm size (different from both Saudi 2 × 2 in and Schengen 35 × 45 mm) and background uniformity.

• Photo sized to 35 × 45 mm (international) or 51 × 51 mm (US/Saudi) instead of the required 43 × 55 mm
• Background colour off-white or grey instead of pure white
• Head coverage outside the 70 – 80% band
• Visible shadow on the face or wall
• Photo taken more than 6 months ago
• Glasses worn (GDRFA banned them in 2018)

UAE visa application channels — GDRFA-Dubai, ICP, free zones

Three primary channels depending on the visa type and emirate:

• GDRFA-Dubai (smartservices.gdrfad.gov.ae) — Dubai-issued residence visas, work permits, dependant visas, golden visas. The primary channel for anyone employed in or sponsored from Dubai
• Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICP, icp.gov.ae) — federal visas for the other 6 emirates (Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah)
• Free zone authorities — DMCC, ADGM, DIFC, JAFZA, etc. operate their own visa systems for employees of free-zone companies. Same 43 × 55 mm photo spec applies
• Tourist visa applications via airlines (Emirates, Etihad) or travel agencies — same photo spec, simpler form, 30 / 60 / 90 day options

Emirates ID photo capture — separate from the application photo

When you receive your UAE visa, you'll also need to complete an in-person Emirates ID enrolment at an ICP or Tasheel centre. This capture is done on-site (you cannot bring your own photo) but the photo specification matches what you submitted with the visa application — 43 × 55 mm, plain white background, ICAO-aligned framing.

Practical tip: if your visa application photo passed GDRFA's compliance check, your in-person Emirates ID capture will also pass the same standard. Submitting a borderline photo with your visa application can mean a fresh Emirates ID re-capture later.

Same-photo compatibility — UAE 43 × 55 mm and other countries

The UAE 43 × 55 mm format is unique — no other major country uses the exact dimensions. Cross-country compatibility:

• Not directly compatible with: any other country's standard. Saudi Arabia uses 51 × 51 mm; Qatar uses 35 × 45 mm; Kuwait uses 40 × 60 mm
